Tantos refer to the six to twelve inches Japanese daggers, the blades of which are designed mainly for stabbing but at the same time can also be used for slashing in combat. The Tanto is usually single bladed but there are some varieties that are forged with double blades. But this weapon also has an artistic side to it which started out during the Kamakura period. As history for the Tanto grew, its artistic designs varied every period, creating a wide variety of Tanto arts throughout the years.
