Add an Interesting Look to Your Collection with the Golden Hinoki Cypress

The Golden Hinoki Cypress, or the chamecyparis obtuse compacta “aurea” as the scientists call it, is an outdoor bonsai tree that is an evergreen. This means it will keep its amazing green leaves all year around, but it’s not a bonsai you’ll see in every collection. It’s actually kind of rare, which is odd since it is a great looking bonsai with fan-like, golden green colored leaves. The leaves are actually tinted and edged with a bit of blue on the undersides, adding even more color to them. The Golden Hinoki Cypress features small cones during part of the year, and it’s the smallest of the cypress bonsai.

Like most bonsai, the Golden Hinoki Cypress bonsai features small roots that are often exposed at the top. Because their root system is so small, they require frequent watering. However, you should not water your bonsai on a set schedule; instead, water it when it looks dry. Remember, too, that all bonsai are vulnerable to the wind, the sun, and heat in addition to harsh winter weather. For this reason, many people choose to plant bonsai in a small, sheltered garden or on a balcony that is protected from the weather. Because of their size, bonsai make great plants for those who have limited outdoor space or who live in flats.
